Emergency Care

If you experience a dental emergency, call our practice as soon as possible. If you need immediate attention after hours, call our emergency phone number and an on-call staff member will help you. If you are unable to reach our office during an emergency, dial 911.

We are here to help you. Any time. Any day. When your dental health is at risk, we will make sure you're treated as soon as possible. While dental emergencies are rare, they can happen.

Common dental emergencies include:

  • Broken or cracked tooth/teeth
  • Broken jaw
  • Dislodged teeth from an injury
  • Swelling of the face or inside the mouth
  • Object caught between teeth
  • Severe toothache or sensitivity

The health of your teeth and mouth is very important to the well-being of your entire body, and while routine brushing and flossing at home is necessary to keep your smile looking its best, visiting your dentist for a comprehensive exam and cleaning is essential. The American Dental Association recommends a dental exam every six months to keep your teeth healthy and your smile beautiful.

Routine dental exams and cleanings can:

  • Prevent tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath
  • Help you avoid costly, extensive dental procedures from long-term neglect
  • Put a stop to dental emergencies
  • Keep your teeth white and remove staining
  • Create a smile that will last a lifetime

Crowns & Bridges

Over time, teeth can weaken and become more susceptible to problems like decay, fractures and discoloration. If you feel your smile isn’t what it once was, a crown can help. If a tooth is decayed, weakened or cracked, a crown may prevent further deterioration of a tooth to avoid pain or even loss of the tooth.

The porcelain-finished crowns create a natural look that matches the shade of your natural teeth. This allows it to blend in and complement your other teeth and smile.

A bridge is made of crowns on either side of a missing tooth with a replacement tooth attached. The replacement tooth fills the missing tooth space. This tried-and-true, traditional treatment can replace missing teeth in a way that is indistinguishable from a natural tooth.

Bonding & Fillings

Bonding is a popular method to enhance your smile. Bonding can correct cracks or gaps in teeth, fill cavities resulting from decay or cover up stains and discolored teeth.

Bonding involves etching a prepared tooth to create microscopic pores in the enamel. An adhesive is flowed into the pores to create a mechanical lock. Next, a tooth colored filling material, called composite, is placed into the tooth which chemically bonds to the adhesive. The composite is then hardened with an ultraviolet light, sculpted, smoothed and polished to make the filling indistinguishable from other parts of the tooth for a beautiful, healthy, natural smile. They usually last over 10 years to keep your pearly whites looking fresh in every future snapshot.

Sealants

Molar teeth naturally have deep grooves and pits too small to fit a brush bristle into. These grooves trap food particles and bacteria lending them to almost certain decay. Tooth decay now affects more than one-fourth of American children aged 2-5, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The number is even higher for older children. Statistically, half of all children 12-15 have at least one cavity.

Dental sealants can help protect your child’s teeth. Dental sealants are flowed into the small grooves and pits, sealing them from decay for the perfect smile on picture day!

Oral Cancer Screenings

Oral cancer includes cancers of the lips, tongue, floor of the mouth, cheeks, throat, sinuses, the hard palate and the soft palate. Oral cancer treatment is more successful when detected early. However, most cases of oral cancer are not detected until they have progressed into a more serious stage that is difficult to treat and sometimes life-threatening. At our office, we are dedicated to doing all we can to detect and treat oral cancers and other abnormalities at the earliest possible stage. During your routine dental cleanings and exams at our office, Dr. Colasanti will perform a thorough screening to check for the signs of oral cancer.

Night Guards

Grinding your teeth at night can cause pain, soreness, headaches and tooth deterioration. Many patients find relief with a night guard. A night guard is a custom oral appliance similar to a mouth guard worn by athletes. It provides a barrier between your top and bottom teeth while you sleep. All night guards made at Livonia Dental Arts are custom fitted for ample comfort and proper breathing. Our night guards are very durable and can help you stop grinding your teeth and rest easy.

Extractions

Wisdom teeth can alter your bite and cause immense pain. Impacted wisdom teeth erupt at an angle instead of straight through the gum line. The tooth can come in unevenly or the tooth may only emerge partially. An impacted wisdom tooth can even destroy the roots and bone surrounding the tooth in front of it to create a situation where other teeth need to be removed along with the wisdom tooth.

When a wisdom tooth only emerges partially, a section of gum may form over the tooth making the tooth hard to clean and creating a food trap beneath the skin. This makes it easy for infection to take hold. To avoid discomfort, teeth shifting and loss of adjacent teeth, damaging impacted wisdom teeth should be removed. At our office we strive to remove wisdom teeth with care, precision and comfort.

Teeth Whitening

It’s not easy to keep your pearly whites — white. Everyday food and drink can stain teeth, leaving lasting effects on your smile. Even with proper maintenance, your teeth could be missing their potential brilliance. Teeth whitening is an excellent way to restore the natural color of your teeth and even make them whiter than your natural color, if desired. Dr. Colasanti will work with you to develop an inexpensive, easy tooth whitening plan that fits with your lifestyle and uncovers the smile you’ve always dreamed of.

Dentures

Dentures are a replacement for missing teeth that can that be removed. Depending on the individual patient, you may need full or partial dentures. Full dentures are used to replace all natural teeth after they are removed. A partial denture is made when some natural teeth that are in good health are to remain in place.

Dental Implants

Dental implants can be a resilient solution to replace missing or extracted teeth. The entire implant process is performed over the course of a few months. The first part may include rebuilding lost bone to create an adequate foundation for the implant. After the new bone matures, a titanium implant is installed which integrates with the bone to create a solid interface to attach a crown and replace a missing tooth that will enhance your smile and function.

Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are an excellent way to redesign and reshape your entire mouth. Veneers are a very thin, ceramic shell that covers your existing tooth structure. Placing new veneers on your teeth can resolve the appearance of staining, cracked teeth, unwanted spaces, misaligned teeth, chipped teeth and more. Placing veneers usually takes two to three visits.

Root Canals

“Root canal” can seem like a daunting term for dental patients, but advances in dental technology have transformed the procedure into a comfortable experience with glowing results. When a tooth is decayed, untreated or injured in some way, it can lead to pain below the crown of your tooth with decay and infection not visible to the untrained eye. A root canal involves removal of the infected or compromised part of the tooth for patient relief and a healthy smile.

TMJ

If you are experiencing jaw pain in the chewing muscles or the jaw joint itself, you may have temporamandibular disorder, or TMD. TMD can be caused by stress, continual clenching of the jaw muscles or teeth grinding. This is a common discomfort that can be resolved with the use of a custom night guard (link to section).

Gum Disease

If you experience gum swelling and tenderness or bleeding when brushing, you might have gum disease.

Gum disease can affect every part of your body. Scientific research has found links between gum disease and stroke, heart disease and diabetes. When your gums become diseased, your entire immune system is weakened. To avoid a compromised immune system, it is imperative to identify and treat gum disease early. Livonia Dental Arts has a history of identifying early-stage gum disease and treating it before it becomes serious and affects other parts of your life.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a condition that inhibits breathing during sleep. It can be potentially deadly and lead to many serious health risks including heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism, anesthesia complications and more. Worst of all, about 90% of people who suffer from sleep apnea don’t know they have it.

An oral appliance can be implemented to relieve sleep apnea and open the airway during sleep. This oral solution can be a more comfortable option than the commonly prescribed CPAP. Livonia Dental Arts has been implementing these oral appliances successfully for years and Dr. Colasanti has given public presentations on his expert knowledge of the procedure. If you are experiencing sleep apnea, stop by our office and rediscover restful sleep.
